Big guys on little bikes

July 24, 2006

Over the last few weeks I’ve seen a bunch of guys – adults, maybe in their 20’s-30’s – on the street riding little kids’ bikes. These are teensy bikes, the bikes you usually see ridden by a first grader with training wheels on them. What’s up with this? Who are you guys?

I’ve seen them mostly on Hawthorne, coasting down the hill towards SE 12th Ave., with their backs hunched and their faces forward. They appear to be earnest in their riding and therefore completely nuts.

If you know anything about this strange phenomona or in any way associated with it (Chunk 666 perhaps?) please enlighten me…

I’ve wondered the same thing! It looks so uncomfortable!

I rode the zoobomber route on a mountain bike at 2am last summer. It’s really dark in Washington Park at that hour. I was not entirely sober, nor was anyone else on that Midnight Mystery Ride. Had I been sober, I would have been more terrified of flying off into the trees. Had I been more drunk, I would have flown off into the trees.

Even on minibikes those guys are flying and they are indeed nuts! Instead of griping and calling the cops, the neighbors under the park should enjoy the little bit of Portland craziness that’s touching their snooty lives. If nothing else, it gives them an excuse to be exasperated. Everyone likes a little exasperation now and again.

    Oh hell yeah!
i love organized insanity. The more people you can get involved the closer it is to a giant art project. The beauty is that even when it pushes up against those borders, you can still just be a dork that rides a really small bike and likes to get drunk.
    Woot!
